Alonso trusts McLaren to fix 2018 issues

It must be difficult being Fernando Alonso in the world of F1 these days. One of the most talented drivers of all time can only sit and watch from his McLaren cockpit as Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull fight it out for race wins, as he trundles around the track, trying to salvage some points from yet another disappointing weekend.

But, there could be light at the end of the tunnel for the Spaniard, as he believes that the team has everything they need to correct the issues faced with the 2018 car.

Alonso’s eighth placed finishes in Austria and Britain are McLaren’s only points finishes in the last six races, a run which has seen them drop to seventh in the Constructors’ Championship.

The two-time champion sits a fairly impressive P8 in the drivers’ standings, and said: “I think now, after investing three or Friday FP1s doing just aero development and aero understanding, we know that maybe we compromised the race weekend a little and the qualifying but we get a lot of information on those Fridays. I think now we are at the point that we know exactly what to do.”

Alonso also added that McLaren are already planning for next year: “There are some fixes for this year but let’s say that 70% of the knowledge and the understanding of the car will be for next year’s project because it requires time - three or four months development and wind tunnel time etc - that is probably better to invest for next year.

“Sometimes it’s good to go very deep into the problems and down in performance to understand the car. So I see a much clearer and brighter future now with all the problems and all the understanding now.”

Only time will tell, but here at GPBlog.com we would love to see Fernando back at the front next year! Can McLaren put Alonso back at the front of the grid, where he belongs?
