Toto Wolff found it hard to cope with the fact that Mercedes could not compete at the front last season, he frankly admits to Auto, Motor und Sport. The Austrian noted that he was not alone in this, as other team members also had to get used to the situation.

"It was disappointing to suddenly be a second behind," he reflects. "What was particularly difficult for us was that it wasn't a misstep of two or three weekends that made us realise where to start. It took much longer."

Mercedes started the season disappointingly partly due to problems with porpoising, taking time to understand the situation and work towards a solution. The team only fought its way back fully after the summer break, allowing it to compete with Ferrari.

According to Wolff, the formation was unclear for a long time where the disappointing performance came from. "During that process, there were many more question marks. When this incredibly competent group of engineers does not know exactly what is happening and has to work everything out very meticulously, it is difficult for everyone to process."

Wolff hopes for revenge

However, the Mercedes team boss is sure that the German racing stable has now gathered enough information about the car to fight for the world title again in 2023. In doing so, however, he stresses that he does not want to underestimate Red Bull Racing and Ferrari by any means.
