McLaren hoped the new regulations in 2022 would ensure they could catch up with teams like Red Bull Racing and Ferrari, but far from it. The Woking-based team is quite a lot slower than the absolute top teams. Lando Norris balks that he still cannot fight for wins in Formula 1, although he is hopeful that McLaren will catch up.

Ferrari managed to take a giant step between 2021 and 2022. Norris argues that this should serve as an example for McLaren. The young Briton hopes he can make a huge leap with his team. "That's achievable," he tells Autosport.com. "I think what they did was extremely good Going from where they were [in 2021], from almost getting beat by us, to going to where they are getting wins, fighting for podiums every single weekend…That's what we need to be aiming for. That level of a jump from one season to another."

Norris is entering his fifth Formula 1 season in 2023. In 82 Grand Prix weekends, he stood on the podium six times and took pole position. A win was yet to come for Norris. His sixth place in the 2021 World Championship is his best championship result. The 23-year-old driver is not satisfied with what he has achieved so far in the king class of motorsport.

Whereas contemporaries like Carlos Sainz and George Russell are currently regularly driving at the very front, Norris has to make do with a place in the middle of the pack. It frustrates him somewhat. "Of course, I wish I was in that battle. I feel like I deserve to be in that battle. I feel like I can be, and I think it will be a great battle," he concludes.
