Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer admits he has not yet thought about naming Oscar Piastri's successor for this season.

Piastri's switch from Alpine to McLaren for the 2023 season has not only cost the French team the loss of the young Australian as a new driver, but has also created a gap for the role of third driver. In fact, even before signing for the Woking-based team, Alpine's test driver was in the process of leaving, making it inevitable for Alpine to look for his replacement with an eye on the upcoming championship.

Doohan?

The most obvious name is Jack Doohan, who also happens to be of Australian descent and has been a member of the Alpine Academy since last season. However, less than two months before the start of the world championship, the official name of the French team's third driver is still unknown. What seemed to be an obvious move for the son of five-time world champion Mick Doohan is still not mentioned by Szafnauer today.

No choice made yet

In an interview with Auto Hebdo the American Romanian confirmed that he has not yet made a choice for the role of third driver. The best-known name is that of Doohan, who will also compete in the F2 championship. But also French Victor Martins, also a member of the Alpine Academy and reigning F3 champion:"I have not thought about it yet - he admitted - Jack will definitely have a role in the team, but we have not yet decided which one. He is really good and very professional for a young guy, he works hard and prepares very well. He rides confidently and has great potential."
