Toto Wolff went through the emotions wringer this weekend. Following a disappointing Saturday, Mercedes went on to complete a 1-2 in the race yesterday. The result meant that Mercedes regain the lead in both championships.

Wolff spoke in his piece on the Mercedes website summing the race up. In it, he admitted Ferrari still have the quickest package, but the determination and belief the German team have kept them on top.

“The race happens on Sunday, not Saturday, and it’s not always the quickest car that wins,” the Mercedes team principal said.

“That is what makes the sport so special. Certainly, in qualifying and at the start of the race, Ferrari had the quickest package. But, with all the circumstances and the rain, it all changed in our favour. We got the luck back that we didn’t have in the last few races.”

The Mercedes team have made some wrong decisions throughout the first half of the season, and Wolff confirmed that it was hard to make the right choice when the rain began.

“It was very difficult to make the right call. At the end, between various voices over the radio he [Lewis] made the decision to stay out - which was good for us because we were splitting the bets and that proved to be the right call,” Wolff added.

Just when you think Ferrari are about to take a strong grip on the season, Mercedes claw it back. The Silver Arrows may need more races like Germany if they are to win the title, but they’re going to be following step by step.
