Jean-Eric Vergne set the fastest time in the first free practice session of the Formula E season. The Frenchman was just under a tenth faster than Jake Hughes, who we still know from his Formula 2 adventure with Van Amersfoort Racing. The pair put number three Sergio Sette Camara and the rest of the field far behind. The difference was more than four tenths.

DS Penske already looked particularly strong at Valencia, so they are continuing this streak in Mexico. With Vergne not only setting the fastest time with a 1:13.294, Stoffel Vandoorne also managed to put himself in the top-five. Vandoorne is currently the current world champion and came over from Mercedes. Incidentally, completely new cars, the GEN3 cars, will be driven in 2023.

McLaren's team has officially completed its first mileage as a Formula E team. The British formation, which took over the team from Mercedes, is immediately in good shape with a second (Hughes) and 11th time (Rene Rast). Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, was present in the garage and looked pleased. Rast did still experience a spin, causing considerable damage to the rear suspension. Consequences for participation in FP2, however, this does not seem to have any implications.

Robin Frijns' team seems to have more to worry about. The Dutchman got no further than the 21st time and had to concede almost 1.9 seconds to the fastest man. The 31-year-old driver only managed to keep Oliver Rowland behind him. Frijns' teammate Nico Muller did not fare much better on behalf of ABT Cupra. He finished just one place above him.
