Audi experiences hectic time: 'And to think 2026 is still a long way away'

Audi's official Formula 1 entry in 2026 still seems far away, but the German car brand is already busy making preparations. Allan McNish describes the scenes as hectic.

It had been coming for a while, but in October 2022, Audi announced that it will participate in F1 as an engine supplier from 2026. The German brand will partner with Sauber, which currently runs under the Alfa Romeo name. The deal with the Italians runs until the end of 2023.

Audi, meanwhile, is already busy making preparations. McNish is abreast of the latest developments within the company. The Brit has been associated with Audi for several years, including as Audi's 2020 team boss in Formula E. He also drove the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the brand.

Hectic time at Audi

"I’d say it’s been a busy, very busy last 18 months. Certainly 2022 has been pretty hectic, like I’ve never seen before," he said on the podcast of Motorsport Magazine.

"And to think that ’26 is still quite a long way away, but it’s only around the corner. It’s 39 months until the first race, not that we’re counting, but yes, from being involved now for over 20 years with Audi, this is part of that progression. It’s an exciting time and I don’t think there’s anybody within the company that’s not looking forward to that first race in 2026," the former racing driver added.

It is clear that Audi is serious about the F1 project. It was recently announced that the German brand is looking for an experienced development driver to help the brand with the car for 2026. It is also looking for a financial advisor who will maintain the budget cap and spending.
