BREAKING: Hamilton signs 2 year contract extension with Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton has finally signed a contract extension at Mercedes. He will remain at the team until at least the 2020 season. He says he has "never been happier."

Toto Wolff has said since pre-season that Hamilton has pretty much signed, but has just minor details left to sort out. Nobody expected the delay to take almost 5 months.

Hamilton is buzzing to sign the contract today. He said: "I have been part of the Mercedes racing family for 20 years and I have never been happier inside a team than I am right now."

Since the start of this season, Ferrari have closed the gap between themselves and Mercedes. But the Brit remains confident that his team can keep on working to produce better results and climb back on top.

"We are on the same wavelength both on and off track - and I am looking forward to winning more in the future and shining even more light on the three-pointed star. I am very confident that Mercedes is the right place to be over the coming years," he added.

"Although we have enjoyed so much success together since 2013, Mercedes is hungrier than ever - from Dr Zetsche and the board members at the top of Daimler, through Toto and the team management, to every single person I meet in the corridors of Brixworth and Brackley."

Hamilton, 33, moved from McLaren to Mercedes in 2014 having been at McLaren since a very young age. He won his second World Championship in his first year at the Mercedes team and went on to defend it in 2015. The British driver went on to win back the championship in 2017 after a year gap.

His boss, Toto Wolff was even more pleased to have the current World Champion on his team for at least another two seasons. It's likely they're waiting for the engine regulation announcement before waiting to sign any further.

"He is one of the all-time greats and his track record speaks for itself. I am very confident that we have some incredible chapters of our story together still to come," Wolff added.

During Hamilton's time in a Silver Arrow, he has broken numerous records including having the most pole positions. This number currently stands at 76 and is on course to grab 100 podiums.

He is currently battling with Sebastian Vettel to become the first driver in the current driver line-up to win five World Championships.
