Formula 1 drivers will have to ask permission from the FIA in future when they want to make political statements, the organisation announced earlier this month. While several drivers reacted negatively to the news, Nico Hulkenberg takes a different view.

The driver will return to Formula 1 next season, working for Haas F1. A lot has changed in the motorsport class since his last season as a regular driver, and with that comes the decision around political statements. However, he is not sitting with the latter issue.

"It's a delicate, difficult subject," he revealed to RTL Deutschland. "We are sportsmen. We come to a country or region to do our job and to do what we love. I have never used this platform for political messages."

For Hulkenberg, therefore, adhering to the FIA's new rules is no problem. However, he can imagine it will be different for others. "I think it's a personal story. Everyone has a personal attitude towards it."

Hulkenberg targets Haas challenge

Hulkenberg will join the American formation next season in place of Mick Schumacher, who failed to convince in two seasons. Meanwhile, the talented driver has already found a new challenge, as he will start working for Mercedes as a reserve driver from 2023.
