Adrian Newey, in conversation with Motorsport-Magazin.com back on the first year of Formula 1 with the new technical regulations. The Red Bull top man says that, in his view, the cars behaved as expected and there were few surprises.

During the test days and the first races of last season, the phenomenon of porpoising was the talk of the day. While most teams tried to fix the bouncing, it was Newey who already foresaw this problem. After all, the Brit already has so much experience in the sport when it comes to designing cars that he also experienced the last time porpoising gripped the top class of motorsport. This ready knowledge ensured that Red Bull was right there at the start of the season. Partly because of this, Max Verstappen became world champion with a record number of points and wins, and the Austrian racing stable became the constructors' title winner for the first time since 2013.

Restrictions

Newey looks back on previous eras after the first year with the new regulations. The Briton feels that the current set of rules severely limits the shape of the bolides, but also has something good to say about the tools that allow them to understand certain problems in time. "Surprises still occur, of course, and porpoising is a perfect example of that. But generally the cars behave as expected, especially once you understand them." He finally adds that nasty surprises are quite unusual as a result.
