Former Formula 1 driver Jean-Eric Vergne has won the Formula E championship in New York. He was forced to finish well as British driver Sam Bird was also in contention for the title on the last day of the season.

Vergne was penalised for using too much power in qualifying but came through the field to finish fifth. Enough to give him the championship crown.

The Frenchman raced in formula 1 between 2012 and 2014. He started 58 races for his Torro Rosso team picking up a healthy 51 points in the process. Daniel Ricciardo was his team-mate.

Vergne finished in 8th place at the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix, equalling his best finish in Formula 1. He left the team following Max Verstappen's arrival.

He was test driver at Ferrari for a full season before moving to the Formula E. All other drivers' who have won this championship, have previously raced in Formula 1. These include; Nelson Piquet jr., Sebastien Buemi, Lucas Di Grassi and now Jean-Eric Vergne.
