Schumacher on role at Mercedes: 'Grateful for Wolff's trust'

Mick Schumacher will be in action as Mercedes' reserve driver in 2023. The team announced the news immediately after Ferrari's official announcement that ties with the German driver had been severed after four years.

Rumours had been circulating for some time that Mercedes would be interested in Schumacher as a third driver in 2023. The German will be replaced by compatriot Nico Hulkenberg in 2023 and is thus without a full-time F1 seat. Toto Wolff spoke highly of the young driver.

Ferrari officially announced on Thursday that ties with Schumacher had been severed after four years. The news was already brought out there the German media earlier this year, but now the Italian team has confirmed the news itself. Mercedes immediately seized the opportunity to announce Schumacher as their third driver.

Schumacher enthusiastic about new role

As a reserve driver, Schumacher will be using the Mercedes' simulator in Brackley. The German will also be present at all Grands Prix during the 2023 season. "I am thrilled to be part of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team as their reserve driver for 2023, and I am committed to give it my all to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment. I take this as a new start, and I am just excited and grateful to Toto and everybody involved for putting their trust in me. F1 is such a fascinating world, and you never stop learning, so I look forward to absorbing more knowledge and putting in all my efforts for the benefit of the Mercedes team," Schumacher revealed in Mercedes' press release.
