Alexander Albon enters his second season at Williams with great confidence. The driver returned to Formula 1 at the beginning of this calendar year and he was very happy about that. Indeed, his feeling was that he was not yet ready in the motorsport class.

The Thai was allowed to join Red Bull Racing in the middle of 2019 as Pierre Gasly's replacement. After a difficult start, he was given another chance to measure himself against teammate Max Verstappen the following year, but again he failed to impress. Red Bull therefore brought in Sergio Perez as a replacement.

Albon hoped for Red Bull support

However, Albon still does not think he has failed at the Austrian racing stable. Although he agrees that it was difficult to find his rhythm at the time, he saw himself improving towards the end of his Red Bull period. However, he was not given more time to continue the upward trend.

He expects Williams looked at those improvements when they brought him in. "I imagine they looked at what I’ve done before. I think people forget that I had actually a very strong start to F1! That’s why I was in Red Bull," Albon states in conversation with The Race.

"It’s a hard one, because you can never really get full closure. I felt like my last few weekends in 2020 started to really improve. I started to understand a couple of things, but obviously, it was too late. And you then end up not driving a Formula 1 car and looking for answers."
