The FIA has confirmed that as many as six sprint races will take place in 2023. Formula 1 teams can also count on an increase in the budget cap as a result, as sprint races cause extra wear and tear and a higher risk of incidents.

On Wednesday, the World Motor Sport Council approved several changes for the new season. These include doubling the number of sprint races to include Azerbaijan, Belgium, Qatar, the United States, Brazil and Austria.

However, doubling the sprint races means that teams may have to deal with extra crashes. Engine parts will also suffer more wear and tear because of the extra races. Therefore, teams will get more leeway with the budget cap.

F1 teams get extra budget for sprint races

In 2022, teams could count on an extra $150,000 for each sprint race, with another $100,000 in case of crash damage. Next year, that number will rise to $300,000 per sprint race. Compensation for incidents will be eliminated. So in total, teams can count on an extra $1.8 million per year over the next two seasons.

Changes have also been approved to the car's roll bars, but they will only apply from the 2024 season. Following Guanyu Zhou's violent crash at the British Grand Prix, in which the Alfa Romeo driver flew upside down through the gravel and tipped over against the barrier, the roll bars will be made even stronger to withstand heavier loads.

The WMSC has also officially approved the new 2023 calendar. Last week, it was announced that the Chinese Grand Prix will not go ahead due to the Covid measures still in place. The list does not yet show a replacement for the race, leaving a big gap between the Australian Grand Prix and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The organisers are still trying to find a replacement.
