Former F1 driver Karun Chandhok, in an interview with sponsor Betway, looks ahead to new driver duos that will make up the Formula 1 grid in 2022. For instance, the Indian is very curious about the new line-up at McLaren and also expects some tension between Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly at Alpine.

Oscar Piastri 's arrival at McLaren has caused controversy, but he has proved to be a natural in both Formula 3 and Formula 2. Chandhok says he knows a few engineers who have worked with the young Australian in both step-up classes, but also knows George Russell and Charles Leclerc well through previous collaboration: "They say he's the best young talent they've seen come through. So, there's a high amount of expectation on him to see what he can deliver."

The Indian does feel that Piastri will be thrown to the lions. According to him, this would mainly be because the Australian will join a team where Lando Norris is already well established who also did well last season. "He really upheld McLaren's honour", the analyst refers to the disappointing performance of the departed Daniel Ricciardo.

'Matter of time'

Chandhok says of the new Alpine duo that it is a matter of time before it explodes between Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly. Finally, the Sky analyst also says he is thrilled that Logan Sargeant has a seat next year and is curious to see if Williams, with a new driver duo, will manage to drive more up front and score points regularly.
