Mattia Binotto believes Ferrari can be satisfied with how the season went. Although it did not compete for the world title until the end of the season, the team boss saw that the formation made a clear step up from past seasons. He told the BBC.

The Italians managed to surprise Red Bull Racing at the start of the season. Charles Leclerc benefited greatly from Max Verstappen's dropouts and moved to the top of the world championship. Over the course of the season, however, Ferrari lost its grip and failed to catch up with Max Verstappen.

"In terms of development, Red Bull had a clear plan which was reducing the weight of the car which was not our case and they knew what to tackle to get performance out of the car," Binotto explained. "For us it was more complicated because it was more through aerodynamic development and trying to improve the car."

Binotto on developing car

During the season, Binotto's team decided to stop developing the car in certain areas in order to keep enough budget for the 2023 car. The Italian finds it hard to say whether this was the right choice, although he still stands by the decision.

"If I look back, the development we did was not sufficient. We stopped very early because of expenditure reasons and that is something we need to review. Have we made the right choice by stopping so early in terms of priority between 2022 and 2023? Only 2023 will tell us what was the right choice."
