British Grand Prix: FP1 Summary and Results

Mercedes dominated the first practice session at the British Grand Prix with home favourite Lewis Hamilton leading his team-mate Valtteri Bottas in a 1-2.

Sebastian Vettel was third, over half a second behind Hamilton. Kimi Raikkonen was fifth, sandwiched by the Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo in fourth and Max Verstappen in sixth.

Verstappen suffered a late gearbox problem which forced him to retire from the session. Going through the final few corners, his gearbox made a horrible noise and the Dutchman was told “do not shift” over the radio. Hopefully for last time’s winner, his team can fix his car up and we’ll see him back out there for FP2 later today.

Another driver who had a terrific time of it last week in Austria was Romain Grosjean, securing P4 and his first points of the season.

However, despite finishing seventh in FP1, the Frenchman will not be happy with how the session ended for him, spinning at Abbey (Turn 1) and skidding over the gravel before an inevitable meeting with the barriers, ruining the front right of his car. His Haas team have got a job on their hands to get him back out in good time for FP2.

Elsewhere, both Force Indias made the top ten, but it was struggles for McLaren, Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne finishing 15th and 17th respectively.
