During the previous weekend in Brazil, it was evident that Fernando Alonso the relation with Alpine has cooled down. There, he expressed that he was looking forward to testing the 'green car' (Aston Martin). Next week that will indeed happen, but first a final Grand Prix with Alpine is scheduled.

In Abu Dhabi, the Spaniard will say goodbye to the team with which - under the name Renault - he managed to win his two world titles. Alonso therefore owes a lot to the French and in the run-up to Abu Dhabi, he expresses it. "I have very fond memories of the days at Renault and now Alpine, and the team will always have a special place in my heart," quotes AutoHebdo.

Progress

In 2021, Alonso returned to Formula 1 after retirement. He immediately felt comfortable at Alpine. "Since then we have had good results. The podium in Qatar was a personal highlight for me and something we achieved on merit that weekend. We have all had to deal with completely new regulations for 2022 and the team has managed to respond to these changes and there has been progress compared to last year."

Alonso still has the qualities to compete on a high level in Formula 1, even though he is now 41 years old. Reliability problems have prevented the Alpine's - and therefore Alonso's - true potential from being shown this season. Despite this, Alpine holds a 13-point lead over McLaren in the constructors' championship. In Abu Dhabi, fourth place can be claimed.
