German news outlet Auto Motor und Sport has stated that Max Verstappen wouldn't have won the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend if it weren't for his early move on Kimi Raikkonen.

In turn seven of the first lap, Verstappen saw a gap that the Finn had left him as he was locking up left right and centre, and the Dutchman dove into it, touching Raikkonen as he went past him. From that point on, the Dutchman kept the Ice Man behind him. That was the deciding factor, according to Michael Schmidt.

"He had to make that move, otherwise he would've been stuck behind the Ferrari the entire race," he wrote.

"Raikkonen's car ran eleven kilometres per hour faster than the RB14 on the straight."

Of course, that wasn't the only reason Verstappen won. The main reason was Mercedes' tactical blunder, which saw them staying out during the Virtual Safety Car while everyone else behind them dove in for a stop. Verstappen came out in second and was well within Hamilton's pit window, and on fresher tyres.

"When the Virtual Safety Car came into force Lewis Hamilton was at turn seven, so the team had enough time to get him in.

"Because Hamilton stayed out he lost more than eight seconds and immediately was out of the race," the journalist concluded.

Do you think Verstappen would've still won the race if he wouldn't have made that move on Raikkonen? Or would the Finn then have won his first race of the season?
