A qualifying that was headlined by the rain or lack there of as the conditions changed constantly throughout all three sessions. Eventually it was Kevin Magnussen who came out on top ahead of Max Verstappen and George Russell. When Russell went into the gravel trap causing a red flag, which halted the session enough for the track to get wet enough to stop anyone from improving.

Leclerc and Ferrari's mistake

Leclerc headed out on inters at the start of the session as he was surronded by those on drys. The Ferrari driver would have hoped that it rained enough for the dry's to be ineffective. But this proved to be the wrong call as those on dry tryes managed to set their times. And he was a lot slower than the rest of the grid, the only positive really was the he held up Perez for an extra lap. Before pitting for the dry tyres, putting him into 10th place.

Russell's red flag gives HAAS pole

While Leclerc was pitting for dry tyres, it was Russell who put his Mercedes into the gravel trap, which brought out the red flag. As the session came to a pause it was Magnussen who topped the time sheets on the intial dry run after putting in an impressive lap time. Shortly after the red flag flew the rain started to come down around the circuit which stopped the drivers from improving.

It was the world champion Verstappen in second, as Russell holds onto third despite being out of the Q3 session, followed by Lando Norris, Carlos Sain, Esteban Ocon, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and finally Leclerc.

Kevin Magnussen is the first pole sitter for Denmark, and HAAS the first US team to take pole since 1975.

Drying track causes fear of jumbled up Q1

Although rain was not falling at the start of the first qualiyfing session, the drivers still headed out on intermidiate tyres for their first set of laps. It was Alonso who intially led Verstappen and Perez, as the Spanaird was the last one to set a lap as the track dried. The decision would then need to be made whethter the drivers would go out on slicks for the second set of laps. Pierre Gasly was the first one who tried the slicks, who was down on his inters time on his soft tyres intially, but looked to pick up the speed as on his thrid lap on the slicks he set purple sectors. This caused a scramble for slick tyres as the rest of the grid looked to copy the Frenchman.

In a last three minutes which saw Alonso, Nicholas Latifi, Albon and Norris, all lead the session it was eventually Norris that topped the first session, ahead of Hamilton and Alonso, as Latifi, Zhou Guanyu, Valterri Bottas, Yuki Tsunoda and Mick Schumacher that failed to progress. As it was Leclerc, Sainz, and Verstappen all who avoided elimination on their final lap.

On and off rain causes close Q2 session

As Q2 got undeway, so did the ability for the drivers to activiate DRS as the track was declared dry. But just after the first few laps were completed, several drivers started reporting the rain spitting around the middle of the lap. This meant that with five minutes left it looked unlikely any driver could improve on their time. With Esteban Ocon, Albon, Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, and Lance Stroll in the bottom five. However then suddenly the rain eased up and had the ability to put the grid into disorder again, however it was still Albon, Gasky, Vettel, Ricciardo and Stroll who failed to qualify for the final session
