Fernando Alonso, at the age of 41, still manages to reach a high level in Formula 1. The Alpine driver is ninth in the world championship and can be found in the top ten most of the time. At the same time, he is having little luck this season, as Martin Brundle also observes.

Alonso is performing extremely well after the summer break. While his performance in the Netherlands was good for sixth place, in Japan and the United States he achieved seventh finishing position twice. However, he could have secured many more points during that period.

Pain for Alonso after stoppages

Indeed, the two-time world champion was already facing drop-outs in Italy and Singapore. Last weekend, Alonso also had to pull his car over in Mexico, losing expensive points. Brundle well understands his disappointment.

"Alonso was without doubt best of the rest until his power unit failed," Brundle states in his column on Sky Sports. "Such was his determination and attacking mode that when he exited the car he rested his head in despair on a tyre barrier. Not the kind of emotion we often see from him, but he's lost a serious chunk of points this year to unreliability."
