An eighth placed finish and keeping up your six-race points scoring streak does not sound like a poor afternoon, especially after your team mate finished just behind you to complete a double points finish in your team’s home race, but that is how Carlos Sainz was feeling after a late loss of power cost him two positions.

Sainz was running as high as third in the opening laps after the turn 1 crash that saw Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas suffer damage and several other take to the runoff areas.

However, he was quickly overtaken by Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen before settling in sixth, only for a late power issue to demote him to eighth.

“The second-half of the race was fast-paced and we were managing it well until the sudden problem, which cost us two or three seconds a lap,” said Sainz.

“It’s a shame and I feel sorry for the whole team, as I think we deserved to be best of the rest today.

“These things happen in racing, and it’s my first reliability issue of the year, so let’s move on and start preparing Austria.”
