Who slept well/bad after the French Grand Prix

25-06-2018 09:28

Good Morning! We’re all waking up to try and tackle the Monday morning blues, but so will the teams and drivers. Read below as we examine and predict what kind of sleep if any, those involved had.

Who slept well?

Lewis Hamilton

Starting with an obvious one. He won the race, his 65th of all time, regained the championship lead and it’s another circuit where he has found success. He has a 14 point lead over Sebastian Vettel, and even though Vettel was hampered by the issue in the first corner, it looked like nothing was stopping Mercedes and their new spec engine. Sweet dreams about a fantastic two weeks ahead for the Brit.

Charles Leclerc

What a weekend for the 20-year-old. Qualifying in 8th position and then holding on to grab a point yesterday. And getting a point in a Sauber of that quality is no easy feat. The man from Monaco is now level with Esteban Ocon on 11 points. The pair are 13th and 14th in the championship. That will boost his chances of getting his dream drive at Ferrari next season. His dream of driving in red may soon become a reality.

Max Verstappen

It’s as if he has turned a corner since Monaco. His podium this weekend was the first time this season in which a Red Bull driver has achieved back-to-back top-three finishes. That’s got to be a great buzz for the Dutchman before heading into Red Bull's home Grand Prix.

Cyril Abiteboul

That’s now the third race in a row where his two drivers have finished in the points. After all that has happened this week with the engine news, something like this was needed for Abiteboul. To make matters slightly better for him, both Toro Rosso drivers with Honda engines struggled all weekend.

So who slept badly?

Romain Grosjean

It was a home race for the Frenchman, and despite his crash earlier in the weekend, he did well to get the opportunity for his first points score of the season. But he missed out and finished 11th. Kevin Magnussen didn’t ease his pain as he came home in 6th taking his 2018 tally up to 27. He would have been replaying his mistakes as he went to sleep last night.

Sebastian Vettel

Whilst Seb keeps claiming he had “nowhere” to go, deep down he knows he could have done better.  He could have been fighting Lewis Hamilton. And the German has lost his championship lead. Yes, it was only one point, but he’s now 14 points down and we’ve seen how fast Mercedes can run away with it. He’d have struggled to get to sleep.

Fernando Alonso

Whilst somehow he seems to remain positive, the French Grand Prix marked his third consecutive Grand Prix retirement. Frustrations must have been boiling over as he was getting to sleep. Perhaps slightly hung over from his victory in Le Mans, he’ll want McLaren to get their act together very quickly. They do not have the engine excuse anymore.
