Fernando Alonso went from winning in Le Mans to finishing last in Paul Ricard after a torrid weekend for the McLaren team. Embarrassingly, both cars were out in Q1 on Saturday and a lack of performance left both himself and Stoffel Vandoorne languishing near the back.

The Spaniard voiced his displeasure over team radio halfway through the race whilst he was running in twelfth.

"I have no brakes, no tyres, we are out of the points. I will try to do whatever but I don't care too much about your laps."

Alonso had pestered the team to pit him late on after the possibility of points had fallen away so he could set the fastest time, however, an error in the pits meant his tyre was fitted incorrectly and he was forced to retire from the race.

McLaren has been under pressure all weekend after a series of reports from the Daily Mail suggested that team members were tired of a lack of results or explanation for the poor performances.

Add to that the Freddo-gate incident, members of the team being given Freddo's as a reward for their work, and this weekend was one to forget for the Woking-based outfit.
