Victory was not handed to Max Verstappen in the United States Grand Prix. A failed pit stop due to a non-working wheelgun made things difficult for the Dutchman, but he still managed to drive to victory. That performance drew praise from Jacques Villeneuve.

After losing his lead twice after a safety car, things went all wrong at Red Bull Racing's pit stop, but Verstappen pulled out all the stops to still take the win and secure the constructors' title for his team. Villeneuve called the world champion's performance "impressive".

In his column for Formule1.nl Villeneuve writes that Lewis Hamilton had a good pace to pick up, which could be seen by the fact that Verstappen was struggling to get ahead of the Mercedes driver. The 1997 world champion saw a determined Verstappen advance towards Hamilton, who saw his first win of the year slip from his fingers.

Villeneuve denounces Hamilton's behaviour

Villeneuve understands that this must have been disappointing for Hamilton, but is less pleased with the complaining that could be heard on his team radio after Verstappen overtook him. "That complaining is getting annoying," said the former Formula 1 driver, who felt it was done in an exaggerated manner during the race.

Still, the Canadian noticed a funny moment during the Mercedes driver's persistent complaining. Verstappen was shown a warning flag for exceeding track limits, but not much later Hamilton received the same warning. "He was so focused on Max going over the track limits that he didn’t realise he was making mistakes himself," Villeneuve said.
