The Singapore Grand Prix held a fortnight ago is going to look different in 2023. Namely, the circuit at Marina Bay will be made a little shorter and a little faster to make overtaking easier. It is not clear if that is also the main reason the track is being changed now.

The organisers themselves have not yet confirmed the changes, but a different layout of the Singapore circuit can be seen on the website where fans can buy tickets for the 2023 race weekend. One reason for the changes could be that the organisation wants to make overtaking easier for the king class of motorsport by creating a larger braking zone after the straight that has been made longer. However, these are only speculations.

New layout

As shown below, there is now a longer straight at the end of the track. Turns 16 to 19, infamous as the sector where Nelson Piquet Jr. crashed at Renault's request in 2008 to help teammate Fernando Alonso to victory, will be skipped. This removes the legendary chicane under the grandstand, which of course no longer sells tickets. So between turn 15 and what we now know as turn 20 will be a long, straight stretch. Whatever the reason for the change, overtaking certainly seems easier as a result due to the larger braking zone for what will be the new turn 16.
