Verstappen on possible title in Japan: 'We will have to give everything'

Max Verstappen is excited to be back in Japan after two years of absence. Between 2014 and 2019, all races at the Suzuka circuit were won by Mercedes and Verstappen hopes to end that run. Supreme concentration at Red Bull Racing will be required for that, though, Verstappen said.

Lots of F1 fans in attendance this weekend

"I am very much looking forward to it. It [the Grand Prix] hasn't been on the calendar for years and the fans here are always so enthusiastic. With Honda there, we are looking forward to a great race. It makes it extra special because we are back here with Honda," Verstappen said in the press conference ahead of the weekend. "All of Japan is F1 crazy, the fans are passionate in a positive way and everyone dresses the same way. The whole culture is great and it's great to be here."

Verstappen thinks Suzuka is one of the more enjoyable circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. According to the reigning world champion, it is a challenging track, where the driver can make a difference. "The track is very 'old-school', there are a lot of fast corners, so you have to build up step by step during each session. You'll also have to pay attention to the weather, because I've heard it can rain, which might make things more exciting."

Verstappen in Japan

Last week's weekend in Singapore was one to quickly forget. Qualifying failed due to not enough fuel in the tank and on Sunday there was no more in it than seventh place, after he shot straight on after a slightly too enthusiastic overtaking attempt at Lando Norris. Verstappen admits he is hoping for a flawless weekend this weekend.

"We still have a chance to win the drivers' championship this weekend, but for that we have to have a perfect weekend, so we will give everything," said Verstappen, who has winning his second world title in Japan in his own hands. If he wins AND drives the fastest lap, he will have his second world championship in the pocket (regardless of where Charles Leclerc and/or Sergio Perez finish).
