Ricciardo: "If it can't be me, then I'm glad it's him"
Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen formed a dynamic duo together at Red Bull Racing, but at the end of 2018, the Australian decided to switch to Renault. In an interview with Viaplay, the McLaren driver has nothing but praise for his former teammate.
Ricciardo happy for Verstappen
Ricciardo says Verstappen's speed was evident from the start. The Dutchman previously stated that he made a turning point in 2018, when he crashed in the third free practice for the Monaco Grand Prix, depriving himself of a good qualifying position. This did not escape his then teammate either.
"Then he quickly just found a way to fix that, to mature a lot. So I think 2018 he made probably the biggest transition from like young boy into man. I think some off track maturity made his on track results a little more consistent," said the Australian.
For Ricciardo, there was no world title in it for now, but he wholeheartedly wishes it to his former teammate. "To see him now go on and do what he's done, I'm like: if it can't be me, then I'm glad it's him. Because at least I feel like I put up a fight to him and that makes me look okay," he concludes with a broad smile.
