Nyck de Vries has made quite a name for himself following his sudden Grand Prix debut in Formula 1, but the Dutchman remains realistic about his chances for next year.

In addition to Williams, De Vries is now said to be high on the Alpine candidate list. The 27-year-old driver from Sneek caused a stir with his fine performance in both qualifying and his race debut, in which he immediately scored points. From the F1 paddock, there was much praise from people who believe De Vries deserves a permanent seat.

De Vries realistic about F1 chances

His chances of landing an F1 seat for 2023 have increased significantly as a result, but De Vries himself remains realistic. "This world is very volatile and it’s not only merit counts, so it's out of my control," he says in conversation with The Race. Regardless, he can look back on a proud moment by making an excellent GP debut. "Regardless of the future whether I’m here or not, I can look back on a proud debut and first moment in Formula 1. I enjoyed it."

At the moment Williams seems to be the most likely choice for De Vries, but Alpine is also a possibility. However, that would depend on Pierre Gasly making the move from AlphaTauri, which in turn would depend on Colton Herta securing a super-licence in a roundabout way. De Vries jokes that he "may have to prepare a PowerPoint" to advertise himself at Alpine, after George Russell did the same at Mercedes and Williams prior to his own F1 debut.
