Carlos Sainz believes that the new generation of F1 cars are "too wide" for Monaco qualifying. Drivers are often found queueing at the end of the lap around Rascasse which can lead to drivers being impeded and struggling for space.

Sainz described qualifying round the streets of Monte Carlo as a "circus" and that the traffic jams caused by drivers trying to find space was difficult to plan around.

“It was a circus,” he said. “Maybe (they’re) too wide these cars, too many cars on this Tarmac for 20 at the same time trying to put a lap together.

“Whenever I was pushing the rest were doing cool down laps, I was finding them and then I was pushing, (then) I was on a cool down lap and they were on a push lap.

“It was very difficult but in the end we made it with only one set of tyres in Q1 which was a difficult task, but we made it.”

Sainz was able to outqualify his compatriot Fernando Alonso and will start the grand prix from eight position.
