Pirelli asked to simplify tyre names

Pirelli asked to simplify tyre names

25-05-2018 08:20

The FIA and Formula 1 have asked Pirelli to simplify tyre names ahead of next season in order to make it easier for fans to understand. However, the range of tyres will be the same.

It's proposed that Pirelli will opt to name the same three tyres each week. These will be called 'hard', 'medium' and 'soft. The same range of tyres will still be in use and they'll pass this information on using an alphabetical system. Sounds more confusing? Mario Isola, boss at Pirelli explains.

"We had a request from FOM and FIA to just call them hard, medium and soft."

"With three colours, the same colours and same names for all the races, but obviously different compounds, because you cannot use the same compounds in Silverstone or Monaco.

"On a second level we will have compound A, B, C, D, E, F or whatever, and we will tell you that for this race, the hard is B, the medium is D, and whatever.

"So for spectators, it's probably more understandable, but you also have the possibility to go deeper in detail for technical information that we will continue to provide."
