Drivers are expecting lap records to be smashed in Monaco

Drivers believe the hypersoft will deliver record-breaking lap times in Monaco this weekend. It was only last year when Kimi Raikkonen set a lap record in qualifying, but Ocon and rivals expect this to be smashed.

The race lap record was beaten last year as well with Sergio Perez setting a 1:14.820, over 2 seconds slower than Kimi Raikkonen’s pole position.

The track, between turns seven and 15, has been resurfaced which could speed things up even more. The resurfacing continued on the home straight.

Estaban Ocon said: “It’s going to be a track record for sure, by quite a lot. It’s going to be impressive to watch.”

Renault driver Carlos Said backed his rival up suggesting we could see “absolute madness.”

“This tyre around Monaco could be something special, we will see very quick lap times if that is the case,” the Spaniard added.

Daniel Ricciardo, 2016 runner-up at Monaco, insists he would love to be the driver to break it and hold the record come Monday morning.

“I’m excited to get on the hypersoft. I don’t know what the lap record is here but I’d like to think we’d beat it this weekend. It would be nice if I do it,” Ricciardo claimed.
