The first race weekend after the summer break is in full swing. Where several drivers have to get used to the new situation, Max Verstappen does not suffer from that at all. The Dutchman takes his good form of the first half of the season and goes for victory again in Belgium.

On paper, Verstappen will not have an easy time on Sunday. With Red Bull Racing opting to replace the engine in his car, he will face a grid penalty this weekend. Together with Charles Leclerc, who made the same choice with Ferrari, he is therefore at the back of the grid.

The other drivers from Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull also have the qualities to end up on the podium, so the Dutchman faces a formidable challenge. During the first day in Belgium, however, Verstappen set the bar high.

Verstappen convinced with great time

During the second free practice, Verstappen managed to record a time of 1:45:507. With that time the reigning world champion was almost nine tenths quicker than his rival Leclerc, while keeping Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez much further behind.

Leclerc's reaction in his car spoke volumes. He was told over the board radio by his team how fast Verstappen had driven his lap, and the Monegasque could hardly believe that his rival had succeeded. It was by far the fastest time of the day for good reason.

Competitors must fear for Verstappen

When Verstappen has to start from the back of the grid due to a grid penalty, it is usually the case that other teams have the opportunity to catch up with the Dutchman. This season, however, he seems capable of anything.

In Hungary, just before the summer break, Verstappen proved that with hard work he could take victory from tenth place. In Belgium, too, the competition has to watch out for him. On the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, where it is relatively easy to overtake, the driver will go for his chances. In this way he can ensure that he wins the world title as soon as possible and prepare optimally for the Dutch GP.
