Vettel believes Monaco isn't a must win despite falling behind

Sebastian Vettel claims Ferrari aren’t in a “must-win” situation just yet despite signs of a Mercedes improvement. The German hasn’t been on the podium since winning the first two races of the season and whilst Mercedes aren’t favourites in Monaco he’s keeping the pressure off himself.

The four-time world champion had a strong lead over Hamilton in the drivers' championship in April. This has since been reversed. But he denies Ferrari are panicking.

“We are coming here because we want to win, not because we must win. That is a big difference,” Vettel told Sky Sports F1.

“I think it will be incredibly close. I think Red Bull should be stronger here, especially on Saturday so we will see.

“It’s good if you come here and know that you are in the mix. We will try to make the difference.”

Last season Ferrari locked out the front row in Monaco remaining dominant throughout the race weekend. Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian’s team-mate, set a new lap record and the paring completed a 1-2.

“I think this track is completely different so it doesn’t really matter for this weekend.”

It will be just his 3rd win at Monaco if he crosses the chequered flag in 1st on Sunday.
