Nyck de Vries watched his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne win the world championship in Seoul. He himself was unable to finish the race, but the Dutchman responded proudly afterwards to the achievements of Mercedes in recent years.

Last year's champion collided with Pascal Wehrlein on Sunday, forcing him to retire early from the race. De Vries, who was given a penalty by the race committee after the race, was thus able to end the season early for himself.

"A disappointing end to my race, but a fantastic result for the team," De Vries stressed in Mercedes' press release. "The only thing that counts today is that we won both World Championships. I'm obviously disappointed that I didn't finish, but fortunately that didn't change anything."

De Vries goes into less year

For De Vries, it means that he will end the racing year with ninth place in the world championship, putting him ahead of fellow countryman Robin Frijns. The driver has clearly achieved a lesser result than last year, but according to him that is easily explained.

"I'm not happy with the way my season went, of course, but it wasn't always apparent from the outside what the problem was. It was a kind of snowball effect of small things that meant we weren't able to score points on a consistent basis."
