Aston Martin have sent shockwaves through Formula 1. Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement last week and now Lawerence Stroll has announced that two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso will join them next season.

At the end of 2022, Alonso will leave Alpine again but the 41-year-old will continue to move forward in F1 with a multi-year contract at Aston Martin. Boss Lawerence Stroll acknowledges how Alonso is a "committed winner"

"I have known and admired Fernando for many years and it has always been clear that he is a committed winner like me. I have set out to bring together the best people and develop the right resources and organisation to succeed in this highly competitive sport, and those plans are now taking shape at Silverstone," Stroll said in the announcement.

Sharing values

Aston Martin are a team that want to progress through the grid. They are adamant that they will work themselves towards the top of the grid in the coming years and Stroll believes Alonso wants to do the same.

"It seemed natural therefore to invite Fernando to be part of the development of a winning team, and we very quickly established in our recent conversations that we have the same ambitions and values, and it was logical and easy to confirm our desire to work together," Stroll added.
