An underlying Ferrari issue causes concern for Sainz: "Can't get rid of it"

It looked like Carlos Sainz was going to take pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix, but it was George Russell who pipped him to the post. Whilst it was a surprise to us, Sainz says he knew someone would beat his time. 

Not a Ferrari on pole

For all money, it looked as if Ferrari would get P1 and P2. Predictions suggested it, and Friday practice indications confirmed it. But Mercedes and Russell pulled a lap out of nowhere to claim P1. Sainz isn't looking at what his rivals did though as he blames himself for missing out. 

"As soon as I went across the finish line I knew someone was going to beat that because I had done a few mistakes. I knew someone would beat it and straight away I was not happy. I expected to be beaten by someone else and not George. Congratulations to him because he must have done a great lap," Sainz reacted honestly to Sky Sports. 

Sainz quickly switched his attention to Sunday's Grand Prix. On the dirty side of the grid, he knows he must get off the line quickly to hunt down Russell. But Sainz explains one big problem with the Ferrari car when it comes to this. 

"The start will play a key role, but we are up against a Merc who are getting good starts this season and we not good at them [at starts]. It's an underlying issue that we can not get rid of this year so we know we can work on it for next year and we are maximising what we have. It's something underlying in the car," Sainz concluded.
