About three weeks ago it was revealed that Madrid is investigating the possibility of hosting a Formula One Grand Prix. A letter was sent to Liberty Media, but there is no response to that letter yet, AS knows. What does this mean for the plans?

The Mayor of Madrid already warned that what was discussed between the 'Comunidad de Madrid' and the institutions involved should be seen as premature. However, the 'Comunidad de Madrid' has now given more information about its plans. They told the aforementioned Spanish newspaper that the plan is for the medium term and that a GP can only be held in 2026 at the earliest.

Three options for Madrid

There are currently three ideas for a Grand Prix. The existing circuit of Jarama can be refurbished, a street circuit in the city is not excluded and as a third and last option the construction of a new circuit in the province of Morata de Tajuñ is also a possibility. The cost of this is currently estimated at 30 million euros, but the Comunidad de Madrid says it is not involved in the existing plans of building a whole new circuit.

Madrid has therefore expressed its interest to Formula 1, but there has been no contact with the FIA to 'jointly assess' the letter and take further steps. Formula 1's contract with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has recently been renegotiated until 2026, but Madrid does not care. They do not see two Spanish Grands Prix in a calendar year as insurmountable.

Liberty Media does not react

Liberty Media was asked for a reaction, but the owner of the premier class of motor sports has chosen not to comment on the matter. Formula 1 is currently flooded with requests to organise a Formula 1 race. For example, it was announced not long ago that Nice is also interested.
