Binotto: 'From pole Sainz could have kept Verstappen behind him'

Ferrari lost again to Red Bull Racing at the Canadian Grand Prix. Carlos Sainz did not manage to overtake Max Verstappen for the win. Still, Mattia Binotto sees positives.

"I have seen bright spots. Carlos drove his best race so far, was able to threaten Verstappen and that gives confidence. We are ready to strike back", Binotto tells the NOS. Sainz eventually finished second behind Verstappen after he failed to overtake the Dutchman after the restart. Still, Binotto sees that his driver is making strides.

Sainz waits for first victory

Sainz has not delivered the best results so far. The Spaniard seems to feel the pressure of the title fight, because he ended several times in the wall due to his own mistakes. Sainz also missed out on important points due to Ferrari's reliability problems. The P2 in Canada may give him more confidence for the upcoming races. For now, the Ferrari driver has to wait for his first pole position and victory, but his team boss has confidence in him.

"Carlos is growing and is ready for his first Grand Prix victory. He's getting better each race and is fueling confidence. That is also important for us. We are counting on him in the title fight. It's a shame that he let it slip in qualifying. From pole position he could have kept Verstappen behind him", Binotto says.
