'Old school' kerbs should stay from Verstappen in Canada: 'Are unique'

It had been three years since Formula 1 had been in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix and so a lot has changed. After his victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Max Verstappen was asked what has changed for him and what he has improved the most.

Canada was not necessarily a great circuit for Verstappen between 2015 and 2019. The Dutchman finished on the podium once (third) in 2018, but never won. Due to the Covid pandemic, the race was skipped for two years and now that the GP is back on the calendar, it is suddenly Verstappen who managed to dominate.

Preference for Canada

''In general, experience. Just racing and being in Formula 1. Then the rest is all down to whatever car you have,'' Verstappen remains sober about his own development. 'I always enjoyed coming here to Montreal, but we never really had a competitive package around here because we were always a bit slow on the straight. This year we seem quite competitive on the straights so I knew that it was the first opportunity to really fight for a win and that just makes it that extra little bit more special.''

Verstappen stresses, however, that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has always been a favorite of his. ''But also what I really enjoy, coming here to Montreal, is just the old school kerbs. We have a lot of tracks where we have very standard kerbs and here they are still very iconic and unique. And we really have to keep them because it's so much better to drive for us. I hope we can drive here for quite a few more years,'' the reigning world champion concludes.
