Wolff has hope: "We were quicker than Sainz and Verstappen"

Despite not having the quickest car, Mercedes once again picked up a decent amount of points from the Canadian Grand Prix. The Mercedes team have been extremely reliable with George Russell maintaining his 100% record of top-five finishes in 2022. Lewis Hamilton secured his second podium of the season. But Toto Wolff knows it's still not good enough and vows to continue pushing. 

Better pace

Team boss Wolff insists Mercedes were quicker than Red Bull and Ferrari before the final safety car but doesn't get too hung up on this fact. "We showed some pace today. We ran different drag levels. George opted for more downforce in the rain yesterday, he was still able to overtake because we good at the hairpin. Lewis had a lower wing. You can see the hairpin with the new ashphalt and we suffer less with the stiffness," Wolff told Sky Sports. 

"Before the safety car came out, we were quicker than Sainz and Verstappen. But that's picking out a few laps, I don't think we're back yet we just need to keep working. We need to develop the car. We had it really low on the ground which doesn't function." 

More work to be done 

Mercedes have been trying to fix porpoising since the start of the season. They got a grip on it in the Spanish Grand Prix but dropped backwards during Monaco and Azerbaijan. In Canada, porpoising seemed to be less of an issue but Wolff wants to keep improving. 

"We need to develop the car in a different window then we had. We were having it really low on the ground and that doesn't function. So, we have a development direction. We own the problem and we need to fix it," Wolff concluded.
