Max Verstappen could be very satisfied after qualifying in Canada. The Red Bull Racing driver took pole position convincingly with a time of 1:21:299. Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz also finished in the top three.

As Charles Leclerc with Ferrari replaced his engine, Verstappen had nothing to fear from his direct rival. Sergio Perez still seemed to be able to make things difficult for him, but a crash in the second session forced the Mexican to drop out relatively early.

Verstappen was then very sharp in Q3 and drove over six tenths faster than Alonso. Besides Sainz, Lewis Hamilton and Kevin Magnussen were also in the top five, while Mick Schumacher finished handsomely just behind his teammate.

Disappointed faces at Mercedes and McLaren

George Russell made an attempt to beat the competition and swapped his intermediates for the soft tire. It didn't turn out to be a good choice, as the Briton barely had any grip on the track. As a result, he eventually finished in eighth place. Daniel Ricciardo grabbed P9, while Lando Norris couldn't get any further than the fourteenth starting position.
