Does Leclerc have a bigger problem? 'Overtaking here more difficult than expected'

Charles Leclerc will receive a grid penalty of ten places for the race of the Canadian Grand Prix after all for changing to his third 'Control Electronics'. The Monegasque does not sound frustrated with his team's choice, but there may be bigger problems anyway.

Leclerc has confidence in Ferrari

Ferrari has chosen to replace some elements of Leclerc's F1-75 on Friday after all, which means that the driver will still receive a grid penalty. It is not yet ruled out by F1 experts and journalists that the turbo will also follow and that Leclerc will have to start at the back of the grid.

Leclerc himself seems particularly calm under the circumstances and completely trusts his team. Formula1.com quotes the Monegasque: "Obviously I will start further back now, but I think it was the best choice to make. So let's see. The overtaking today was more difficult than we expected, but yes, the pace is there so hopefully we can fight back to where we want to be."

Ferrari counts on overtaking opportunities

Auto Motor und Sport reports that the grid penalty could in principle have been avoided by Ferrari and that the team deliberately chose to take the penalties in Montreal. In Canada it is usually "easier" to overtake and therefore easier to recover a grid penalty with a fast car. The fact that Leclerc noticed during practice that overtaking was more difficult than expected is not encouraging for the time being and could perhaps be a reason not to replace the turbo after all. With that, the Ferrari driver will probably start halfway up the field instead of at the back.
