Mercedes suffered a lot of porpoising during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso did not recognize the problem in Baku and let it be known in Alpine' s preview that he is satisfied with the car he has at his disposal this season.

With the retirement of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, Mercedes had nothing to fear from Ferrari last weekend, finishing in third and fourth place. Not far behind, Alonso crossed the finish line in seventh place, leaving him with a good feeling from the race weekend.

Where the porpoising at Mercedes was readily apparent, Alonso wasn't really affected. "Our car is quite good at managing the bouncing effect of this year’s cars. I didn’t feel it too much in Baku. We were more focused on managing tyre degradation, especially of the rear tyres," he revealed.

Alonso also revealed that he is looking forward to the upcoming GP which takes place in Canada. The last two seasons the race did not take place due to the coronavirus, but this year it is back on the program. Lewis Hamilton was the last winner of the GP of Canada in 2019.

FIA hopes to solve problems

Behind the scenes, the FIA is working hard to resolve the problems with porpoising quickly, it announced on its official website on Thursday evening. The organization spoke extensively with doctors who stated that the drivers may experience problems with concentration due to the physical discomfort.

The FIA wants to put the health of the drivers first and therefore announced that a number of drastic changes will take place. In addition to the short term, it is also working on good ideas in the medium term to eliminate porpoising.
