There are also three sprint races in Formula 1 this season. It gives a totally new dimension to a weekend, as already on Friday teams and drivers are forced to be there for qualifying.

Reverse grid

Within Formula 1 people are thinking about how the sprint format will be designed. Carlos Sainz has also thought about it. The Spaniard sees much in the way Formula 2 organises a race weekend. There, there is qualifying on Friday, a race with a reverse grid - at least from ten to one - and a day later the main race.

"Then Ferrari and Red Bull would have a huge desire to make it to the top ten," he says in conversation with Marca, assuming that these top teams would then start the sprint race at the back of the top ten. And if there is a sudden accident in the crowded midfield involving the top teams, it will not affect the main race on Sunday.

New show element

According to Sainz, the sprint race in this case will be 'a first stint' of the weekend. Moreover, a stand-alone race - whose result does not affect the rest of the weekend - would add a new show element to the sport, Sainz believes. The next sprint race this season will take place in Austria at the Red Bull Ring.
