Charles Leclerc will once again start from pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. According to the plan, Max Verstappen was actually supposed to get a tow from Sergio Perez, but this backfired. Helmut Marko explains the situation.

At the start of Q3, Verstappen sounded frustrated over the onboard radio. The Dutchman wondered why he had been called out in front of Perez. The deal was actually for the Mexican to give him a slipstream to gain some time, but Perez was delayed in the pit lane.

"The last run didn't go according to plan. We have a system where the drivers go out in turn. Perez started the car and there was no fuel in it yet. Then he had to park again, which delayed everything and he didn't go out before Max as planned. That would have provided a slipstream, but Max was behind Mercedes, it all didn't fit together," Marko explained to ServusTV.

According to Marko, pole was possible

Leclerc was ultimately a lot faster than the Red Bull drivers, but Marko still thinks pole position was possible for his drivers. "Looking at the sector times, pole was possible, but the conditions didn't help. It doesn't matter, in terms of race pace we are strong and we split the Ferrari's," said the Red Bull advisor.
