When Guanyu Zhou appeared at the start of the Grand Prix in Bahrain, he was the first Chinese driver to do so. It became a dream start for the Alfa Romeo driver as he managed to score a point immediately in his first race by finishing tenth in e race. However, it also immediately turned out to be the highlight of his season so far.

Zhou is outgunned by Bottas

While Zhou did not come further than eleventh place in Saudi Arabia and Australia, his teammate Valtteri Bottas scored points in every race he finished. Meanwhile, the experienced Finn has already amassed forty points and Zhou has stuck to that one point from the opening race of the season. Of course, there is no shame in the fact that Zhou cannot yet measure up to the vice-world champion of 2019 and 2020, but the Chinese will need to catch up with the Finn during the season.

Zhou has a contract until the end of the season, so he is by no means certain of a spot on the grid in 2023. Not at all with Theo Pourchaire breathing down his neck. The young Frenchman (only 18 years old) is a test driver for Alfa Romeo and is currently second in the Formula 2 championship. Already winning two races this season.

Zhou is not yet thinking about next season

In conversation with FormulaRapida.net Zhou says he is not yet concerned with his future in Formula 1 and he tries to enjoy his time in Formula 1 as much as possible. "Of course it was quite up and down the last few races," admits the Chinese, "but in general I feel very happy and it is very nice to be here."

He feels that there are still plenty of races in which he can develop. "I think at the moment I'm just going to try and focus on getting myself up to speed and getting the team double points places," he said. So Zhou needs to get to work to start getting the desired results, otherwise, 2022 will be not only the first but also the last season for the Chinese in Formula One.
