It's a tradition. On the same day of the Monaco Grand Prix, there is another such monument in the United States: the Indy 500. Again this year, 33 drivers go up for what is always a spectacular race, with tremendous speeds and the wall always close by. Scott Dixon starts from pole, with reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou next to him in spot 2. The third and final spot on the front starting row is for Dutchman Rinus 'Veekay' van Kalmthout.

Weeks of Indy 500

The Indy 500 is never finished on the same weekend. Weeks ago, the drivers started with the free practices, followed by the qualifying last weekend. After the first day it was Veekay who was by far the fastest. The remaining eleven fastest drivers of the Saturday qualified for the so-called Fast 12 and consequently the Fast 6, both of which were completed on Sunday. During the all-deciding qualifying session, Dixon reached several milestones.

The New Zealander drove a 26-year-old record out of the books, that of fastest polesitter. Scott Brayton had that to his name all along. Dixon did his four laps in the Fast 6 in an unprecedented average of 234.046 miles per hour. Teammate Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was a lot slower. The Spaniard tapped 233.499 miles per hour. Veekay was third at 233.385 mph. Of course pole is important, after the Indy 500 is very long and there is always a lot happening. In any case, it promises to be a very interesting race, with chances for a Dutch win.
