Not everyone agrees with the team orders at Red Bull Racing during the Spanish Grand Prix. Sergio Perez was in the lead, but the Mexican had to give up P1 and let Max Verstappen pass him. Giedo van der Garde understands Perez's frustrations.

Perez agreed to the team orders, but announced over the on-board radio that he did want to speak to his team after the race. The Mexican was clearly not happy about having to give up his first place, but in the end Verstappen was a lot faster on fresher tires.

"I get it. He wasn't let past Max at first with Russell. He must be thinking, guys I've done this again now, when is that contract for next year going to come. In the middle of the race he had the fresher tires and he was faster than the rest," Van der Garde told Viaplay's after-race show.

Perez wants to extend contract

Earlier in the race Verstappen was stuck behind Russell with DRS problems, but Red Bull did not want to let Perez pass despite his faster pace. The Mexican did not suffer from a non-working DRS. Van der Garde thinks Perez is also thinking about his contract, as for now Red Bull has not yet renewed the deal with the Mexican for 2023.

"You are also negotiating for one of those years after that. If you are Checo, of course you want to sign on for another season, because at the moment they obviously have a very good car and they are competing for the world title again," the analyst said.
