Five races are up in the 2022 F1 season. With the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix, we are already past the first quarter. According to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, in theory there is still enough time to turn the tide.

Indeed, Wolff looks back on a successful weekend in Miami and believes there is an upward trend that can only be continued. George Russell finished on P5 and Lewis Hamilton on P6. The two drivers had another battle with each other in the closing stages of the race and were fortunate that Valtteri Bottas made a mistake, which earned them both a place (although it could be argued that the Mercedes cars could have made things difficult for Bottas on their own).

Wolff sees plenty of time to turn the tide

Wolff takes it in a press release on Hamilton: "The timing [of the safety car] was tricky for Lewis, who has been driving strongly all weekend and was on his way to a P5. I'm sure in the remainder of the season a little bit luck will go his way eventually." Wolff continued his statement on the state of the W13: "During the practice session on Friday we saw flashes of the car's true potential."

According to the Austrian, an enormous amount of hard work went into deciphering the data at the factory. It is likely that this is one of the reasons why Hamilton expressed his thanks to the team. The team boss hopes that Mercedes has been able to convert this data into improvements for the race in Spain. It is after all not too late according to Wolff: "To talk in basketball terms; we are going to Barcelona at the end of the first quarter. We know that if we have turned our lessons into strong performances on the track there will be plenty of playing time left."
